Located in the sleepy tribal hamlet of Sogve village, Tamarind Tree is an experimental initiative towards creating a culture of reflective thinking and action in our current milieu. Opting out of the routine like existence of the Mumbai megapolis to develop and cultivate a barren piece of land in Sogve was our first experiment towards the development of Tamarind Tree. However, we initiated living here in Sogve, not just with a “back to the land” philosophy but also with the motivation of learning, living with and contributing to rural society, besides farming.
Tamarind Tree has been actively involved in the struggle for Dahanu's ecologically sensitive status for over a decade. Over time, our world views and perspectives regarding tribal communities and their struggles, environmentalism of the poor, agrarian issues and rural life has undergone dramatic change. In order to share this experience with other people keen to strengthen their tools of analysis and gain different perspectives and insights, we offer internships, volunteer work and exchange programmes. Our programs include interaction with agrarian communities, tribals, government officials, local artisans as well as hands on component of working on the farm. Very often we are looking for volunteers to develop material for our environmental campaign or support our technological work here and offer long duration internships too. We also undertake environmental and education camps for young students.
